Colin Kaepernick Visits Ghana on 4th of July

Never one to miss an opportunity to make an event all about himself, former NFL star Colin Kaepernick took the opportunity to celebrate July Fourth in his “home” country — Ghana.

That’s right. The attention-seeking free-agent went to the African country to celebrate Independence Day and criticize the United States while he was at it.

Kaepernick posted a video of his trip to Twitter.

“How can we truly celebrate independence on a day that intentionally robbed our ancestors of theirs? To find my independence I went home,” the tweet read.

Kaepernick posted the video to Instagram along with a longer message that explained why he was interested in traveling to the country. He wrote that in order to find his personal independence, he “had to find out where my ancestors came from,” which led him to Ghana.

The unemployed football player also included a quote of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, in a video Kaepernick posted to the social media site.

“I am not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me,” the quote said.

OK. That sounds good but how good is it in Kaepernick’s case?

The University of Pennsylvania’s African Studies Center said Nkrumah’s political views “tended toward socialism rather than to capitalism or communism.”

What kind of independence would Kaepernick have enjoyed under Nkrumah?

There’s nothing wrong with looking at one’s ancestry, but there is quite a bit wrong with attempting to use an American holiday to promote anti-American rhetoric. Kaepernick doesn’t seem to realize what Independence Day is all about. He also doesn’t seem to realize that he lives in the greatest country on the planet, which allows him to be as anti-American as he pleases.

Or maybe he does realize those things, but still chooses to make American holidays all about himself.

Either way, it’s just embarrassing.
