Colbert Thanks Donald Trump for Way He Handled Alexandria Shooting

On Wednesday, the United States was shocked after a deranged Bernie Sanders supporter named James Hodgkinson attempted to murder several Republican members of Congress while they were at baseball practice.

Thankfully, Hodgkinson failed to kill anyone, though he did wound five, including House GOP Whip Steve Scalise. On Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump gave some brief remarks about the event that earned him bipartisan praise.

Even late-night liberal comedian Stephen Colbert — one of Trump’s most vile critics — had two words about Trump’s response that no one really would have expected him to say:

“Thank you.”

“Violence of any kind is never justified, and is the last refuge of the incompetent,” Colbert stated at the opening of his show. “Thankfully, none of the members or their staff, or police were killed today, and I will say this: Even in the horror of this day, there was reason to take heart in bipartisan responses like this.”

Colbert then aired clips of House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi speaking on the House floor condemning the attack and calling for unity.

“So, I just want to say ‘thank you’ to the congressional leadership and to the president for responding to this act of terror in a way that gives us hope, that whatever our differences, we will always be the United States of America.”

You can watch Colbert’s remarks here. They occur during the first two minutes of the video.

While Colbert then did go on to do his usual Trump-bashing routine, it was refreshing to see him actually put aside the mockery of the president for a little while.

If anything good can come out of Wednesday’s shooting, maybe, just maybe, it will show us all that the political hatred in this country has become too much, and we all need to tone it down a little bit.

Colbert’s appreciation of Trump for doing a good job certainly is a step in the right direction.
