It looks like CNN’s choice to perpetuate fake news has finally bit the network in the rear.
CNN host Brian Stelter reported Monday that three CNN journalists resigned after the network was forced to retract a story that accused an associate of President Donald Trump of colluding with Russia.
Lex Haris, the executive editor in charge of the network’s investigative unit, Thomas Frank, author of the story that was retracted, and Eric Lichtblau, an editor in the investigative unit, all left the network.
“In the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on CNN.com, CNN has accepted the resignations of the employees involved in the story’s publication,” a spokesman said.
An internal investigation by management at CNN found that some “editorial guidelines” were not followed when the story was published.
The story in question cited one single “anonymous” source that claimed Congress was investigating a Russian investment fund with ties to Trump officials and singled out Trump ally Anthony Scaramucci.
The story, according to Stelter, suffered a “breakdown in editorial workflow” that “disturbed the CNN executives who learned about it.”
They were right to be disturbed by the thinly sourced hit piece, as such stories have no place in real journalism.
Shelter reported that someone briefed on the investigation said members of the investigative unit were told in a staff meeting on Monday that the retraction did not mean the facts were wrong, but that it “wasn’t solid enough to publish as-is.”
CNN is still trying to spin the facts in order to save face, but it’s clear the network is suffering from the lies it has spread in an attempt to smear the president.
Besides the fallout from this false story, an undercover video released Tuesday from James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas showed a CNN producer openly admitting to a “witch hunt” of President Trump despite having no evidence of Russian collusion. Somethings tells me CNN’s rough week isn’t even close to over.
