In the wake of North Korea’s latest test of a nuclear warhead, allegedly one capable of being mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile, the dangerous game of chicken being played on the Korean peninsula has no doubt been ratcheted up another notch.
As such, President Donald Trump spoke with South Korean President Moon Jae-in about how best to counter the growing North Korean threat, and agreed “in principle” to lifting a limit on the size of warheads that South Korea is permitted to produce, as well as giving approval for the allied nation to purchase billions more weapons and equipment from the U.S., according to Reuters.
The limit on warhead weight imposed on South Korea — which was already in the process of being changed — had been set at 500 kilograms, or about 1,100 pounds. A missile range limit of 800 kilometers, or about 500 miles, will remain in place.
The lifting of the warhead weight limit has opened the door for South Korea to pursue development of what has been termed the “Frankenmissile,” which would be capable of destroying the underground bunkers and facilities North Korea employs to hide their command structures and illicit activities, according to The U.K. Telegraph.
That new missile, which is expected to have a warhead weighing in at about two tonnes — about four times bigger than the prior cap — would allow South Korea to be able to take out those underground bunkers without having to rely upon America’s arsenal of “bunker buster” type bombs.
According to the New York Post, the so-called “Frankenmissile” derived its name from the fact that it has more or less “cobbled together” out of multiple pre-existing ballistic missile designs, a sort of hybrid creation similar to the “Frankenstein” creature of iconic fame.
But South Korea isn’t content with just developing their own bunker busting missile to counter the communist regime to their north. They are also nearing the final stretch of their development of a new elite special forces unit, one specifically designed for a “decapitation strike” type of mission against the leadership of the rogue regime.
That squad should be ready to roll out by December, and will be training alongside America’s own vaunted SEAL Team Six — the team that took out terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden.
North Korean commanders should be terrified to hear this news, as it makes it clear that they will no longer have anywhere safe to hide from the swift retribution that will no doubt be headed their way when/if they ever cross the point of no return and provoke justifiable retaliation.
