Modern combat is often up close and intense. Sometimes, however, fighting takes place between soldiers who are so far away they can barely see each other.
A highly accurate sniper shot in Mosul, Iraq, just demonstrated that distance is no problem when it comes to taking out a terrorist.
A special operations soldier from the British Special Air Service reportedly killed an insurgent from the terrorist group known as the Islamic State. That fact by itself isn’t newsworthy, but the details of the fight are amazing.
According to The Daily Star, the incredibly difficult shot was made from a mile and a half away, and although the sniper was British, the rifle was uniquely American.
The firearm used for the operation was a CheyTac M200 Intervention, which is made in South Carolina. It fires an uncommon .408 caliber round, and is effective out to 2,500 yards, or 7,500 feet.
Those numbers are impressive, but they come at a price: $13,000 to be exact.
It certainly isn’t your father’s deer rifle, but the results speak for themselves. During the incident in Mosul, the M200 only needed to be fired once to take out the enemy.
“It was a classic counter-sniper operation. The ISIS gunman was moving all the time to get into the best position to get a kill,” an anonymous military source explained to the Star.
“He certainly knew how to use the ground to his advantage and had clearly received military training,” the source continued. “The SAS team had him in their sights on several occasions but did not have the time to get a shot off. At such a long range there are so many factors which can affect the flight of the bullet.”
Skill and equipment certainly had their role in the engagement, but patience was also a major factor. The special operations personnel waited for hours until the target finally moved into a vulnerable position.
“Just as the light was beginning to fade, the gunman moved into what he thought was a safe location and lifted his rifle up into his shoulder before the SAS shot him dead,” the military source told the Star.
“The distance was so far that it took almost three seconds for the bullet to hit the target,” the report continued.
That incredible shot took a dangerous terrorist off the battlefield, and showed just how effective a single shot can be with the best equipment in the right hands.
