There have been Democrats and their supporters who have been grumbling about impeaching President Donald Trump since the day he was sworn into office, but now a Democrat lawmaker from Texas has upped the ante and made those grumblings official.
KHOU reported that Rep. Al Green, whose district includes part of Houston, took to the floor of the House of Representatives Wednesday morning to officially call for the impeachment of Trump due to alleged obstruction of justice stemming from his firing of former FBI Director James Comey.
In a media release prior to his floor speech, Green specifically identified certain actions by Trump that merited impeachment in his view, which would include Trump’s consideration of the Russia investigation in firing Comey as well as his “threatening” tweet afterwards referencing “tapes” of their conversations, both of which added up to “intimidation and obstruction.”

“I rise today, Mr. Speaker, to call for the impeachment of the President of the United States of America for obstruction of justice,” Green said, according to Fox News. “We cannot allow this to go unchecked — the president is not above the law. It is time for the American people to weigh in.”
Green proceeded to speak for more than five minutes, at one point simply explaining how the impeachment process works, at another point laughably stating his demand wasn’t at all partisan in nature.
Upon the conclusion of his speech, Green, as well as the rest of the lawmakers present, were cautioned by the acting Speaker — Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick — that “members are reminded to refrain in engaging in personalities (sic) toward the president such as accusations that he committed an impeachable offense.”
If Green thought his speech would rally congressional Democrats into going full-bore toward an impeachment of Trump, he may instead find that he has acted prematurely, as many prominent Democrats have been increasingly backing away from making such an “extraordinary” demand before all of the pertinent facts are known.
Perhaps Green should have listened to the advice issued just a day prior to his speech by former Democrat Congressman Dennis Kucinich — who himself had once officially called for the impeachment of former President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney — who nevertheless warned of the “danger in engaging in compulsive opposition.”
“It is destructive to America to proceed with an impeachment at this stage of the presidency,” Kucinich stated Tuesday. “This is not the first thing you reach for, because when the first big move a party makes is towards impeachment, it’s very difficult for the American people to conclude that it is anything but a partisan issue.”
James Comey hasn’t even testified before Congress regarding his termination or any of the other matters surrounding that termination, yet some Democrats are already prepared to get the partisan witch hunt against Trump underway, for literally any reason — or for no reason at all.
Houston voters, you have a problem with one of your representatives that probably needs to be addressed in 2018.
