The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff just issued the military’s official response to President Donald Trump’s transgender statement… and it’s going viral at an impressive rate.
Liberals seem to be cheering the Joint Chiefs’ response as a rebuke against the president, but they have conveniently missed one important detail hidden under the headlines.
Politico just reported that Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the head of the Joint Chiefs, sent a memo to all branches of the U.S. military.
That memo indicated that there will be “no modifications” to the current military transgender policy.
Readers quickly shared the article, most likely as evidence that Trump was powerless to change the trajectory of transgender policy in the armed forces.
At time of this writing, the seemingly anti-Trump article on Politico was 122 times more popular than the average story from that news outlet, based on Facebook Crowd Tangle analytics.
However, a closer look at the actual statement from General Dunford reveals that liberals may have jumped the gun in their excitement.
“I know there are questions about yesterday’s announcement on the transgender policy by the President,” the memo from Gen. Dunford reportedly states.
Then the senior officer wrote the sentence which is getting so much attention.
“There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President’s direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance,” he continued.
Liberals fixated on the first part of that sentence, while blatantly ignoring the second half.
In simple terms, the Chairman acknowledged that orders must go down the chain of command before they are acted upon.
The president must give an official order to Secretary of Defense Mattis, who must implement it with further orders down the chain.
Rather than being a rebuke of Trump’s now famous tweets from yesterday, the statement simply means that the change won’t be instantaneous.
Opponents of the president have apparently also forgotten that Trump conferred with top military officials before making his decision.
That decision will most likely be formalized as executive orders shortly — and it was the right decision on a tough issue.
The military has never been about coddling the people who join, or accommodating their every eccentricity and wish. The U.S. military has one job: To effectively kill the enemy and win wars.
The fact is, a person who wants to serve in the military often has to put other areas of their life aside while they are on duty.
Whether that means not getting a face tattoo, gaining a hundred pounds, taking a six month vacation, or undergoing a gender transition, recruits recognize that they serve the military, it doesn’t serve them.
The time to do things that are incompatible with military life is after leaving the service, not in the middle of stress and war.
Liberals may be celebrating a false victory based on a single line in a memo, but reality has a pesky way of breaking through the hype.
