Bears Attack Professional Runner… He Got Away

Bears Attack Professional Runner He Got Away

While nature can be quite beautiful to look it, it can also be quite deadly. There are a lot of animals out there that will attack humans if they think that they can have the upper hand.

A professional runner from Kenya named Moninda Marube got quite a welcome to America when he was out training in the early morning in Auburn, Maine, last week. Marube came across a pair of black bears who were quite interested in him, the Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal reported.

While Marbue initially tried to stand his ground against the bears (which is what people are supposed to do), as soon as he turned his back on them, they started running after him.

Luckily for him, Marbue was able to outrun the bears — though just barely — because he is a professional runner.

“In my head, I know I can’t swim. I fear swimming. I fear water,” he said, explaining what he was thinking when he saw the bears. “Secondly, I knew I could not climb up a tree because bears can climb a tree. The only solution I had at that time was to be able to run.”

Marbue charged full speed ahead to the house he is staying in, which was about 20 yards away from where he first encountered the bears. By the time he got to the house, the bears were only 10 yards behind him — and closing in fast.

You can watch Marbue recount his experience below:

When he first got to the house, Marbue sheltered on the porch. The only thing standing between him and two massive bears was a flimsy screen door — one they could have easily destroyed.

The bears didn’t seem to realize this, though, because they stopped pursuing him, wandered around for a bit, and then lumbered off to go do whatever it is that bears do when they aren’t chasing people.

“It’s not the house that helped me,” Marbue explained. “It’s God.”

If he had been just a little bit slower, Marbue probably would have been seriously injured, or possibly killed, by those bears. He got very lucky.

Marbue now intends to go running at a later hour to avoid the bears, and he plans to carry a can of pepper spray with him — just in case the bears are looking for round two.

This should serve as a reminder to all of us that there are some pretty serious threats out there in nature, and any time we go out wandering we should have some means of defending ourselves.

Unless you’re a professional runner, of course.
