If recently fired FBI Director James Comey intends to launch a war against President Donald Trump, it’ll require more than just a re-polishing of his resume to secure a win, given what he’s done to both his reputation and that of the bureau.
From deciding not to recommend charges against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to ignoring then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s repeated cronyism, Comey demonstrated during his last year in office that he wasn’t motivated by the pursuit justice or truth.
These are just a few of the way in which James Comey has hurt his own credibility in recent months:
1. JAMES COMEY FAILED TO REIGN IN LORETTA LYNCH.
In a stunning report published last month in The New York Times, for example, it was revealed that Comey failed to seek the recusal of Lynch from the Clinton case, despite his fervent belief that she was trying to cover for the former secretary of state.
“Mr. Comey was concerned that a Democratic attorney general was asking him to be misleading and line up his talking points with Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, according to people who spoke with him afterward,” The Times reported.
Yet he did nothing about this, just like he did nothing when Lynch met privately with Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, on a plane at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport only days before he announced his decision not to press for an indictment.
2. HE SERIOUSLY OVERSTEPPED HIS DUTIES.
Moreover, according to Breitbart, during that announcement on July 5 the then-FBI director “offered judgments and legal conclusions many argue are out of the purview of the FBI, which is charged with documenting evidence and handing it over to the Justice Department.”
He essentially acted beyond his duties, thus demonstrating his penchant for acting like an attention-starved “showboat” and also frustrating prosecutors at the DOJ who reportedly felt that he should have first consulted with them before making his announcement.
3. COMEY LEAKED INFORMATION AND MAY EVEN HAVE PROVIDED FALSE TESTIMONY UNDER OATH.
Couple this with his other actions — going at it alone in the Clinton case, leaking information about his dinner with the president to the media, providing false information while testifying to Congress — and it becomes clear how he “damaged the credibility of the FBI and lost the confidence of both the American people and his agents,” as Rep. Andy Harris wrote for The Daily Caller.
“For several months, he received bipartisan criticism for his mishandling of investigations into both Hillary Clinton and President Trump. Even progressive stalwart ThinkProgress referred to the former FBI director as ‘egregiously incompetent,’ Harris noted. “When ThinkProgress and President Trump actually agree on something, the claim must be valid.”
4. HE ESSENTIALLY RAN A ONE-MAN CIRCUS ACT.
Instead of being a team player, Comey ran a one-man circus show. And yet this clown now reportedly pines to bring down the president.
If his goal was to make the American people laugh and shake their heads in disgust, then congratulations to him for a job well done.
