In a tragic case out of Mississippi, three teenagers face charges of capital murder after they killed a 6-year-old boy who was in the backseat of a car they stole.
The Associated Press reported that Byron McBride, 19, and D’Allen Washington and Dwan Wakefield, both 17, have been charged with the death of 6-year-old Kingston Frazier after the three teens stole the car from a Kroger parking lot in a Jackson, Mississippi.
Frazier was found dead of gunshot wounds to the head in Gluckstadt, about 15 miles north of Jackson. He was in the backseat of the Toyota Camry, which had been abandoned in a muddy ditch. According to WLBT-TV, police said McBride was the one who pulled the trigger.
Frazier’s mom, Ebony Archie, had left the car running when she went into the store. After she went in, a Honda Civic pulled up next to the car and one subject entered. Both cars drove off.
After Archie reported her car missing, police began their search. However, authorities say Archie did not initially tell police her son was in the car, which meant an Amber Alert wasn’t put out until 4:30 a.m.
“When we found out later that there was a child in the back, we immediately notified the highway patrol (who) put out an Amber Alert,” Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason said at a news conference, according to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.
Sadly, the search ended in tragedy when a tip led them to the car in the ditch that morning at 10 a.m.
Archie broke down in the district attorney’s office after being told her son was dead.
When Archie was unable to stand, a “family member carried her down a flight of stairs at the district attorney’s office in downtown Jackson,” the Clarion-Ledger reported. “In between screams and sobs, Archie cried out, ‘I told y’all that s*** wasn’t right, I told y’all.’”
At any point during their journey, these three teens could have let the child out of the car. Instead, they chose to handle his presence in the most despicable way possible. Although all three will be charged with capital murder as adults, only McBride, if found guilty, would be eligible for the death penalty since he’s over 18.
If there’s ever been a case that calls for the death penalty, this would seem to be it.
