A poll published last year provided a glimpse into why the United Kingdom has become a hotbed for radical Islamic terrorists such as Salman Ramadan Abedi, the perpetrator of the Manchester Arena bombing.
Conducted on behalf of the British public-service broadcaster Channel 4, the poll revealed that only a tiny one-third minority of Muslims living in the U.K. “would inform the police if they thought somebody they knew was getting involved with people who support terrorism in Syria.” A significantly larger 66 percent majority would say nothing.
Likewise, 32 percent of the Muslim respondents were unwilling to “condemn those who take part in violence against those who mock the Prophet,” 34 percent were unwilling to “condemn those people who take part in stoning those who commit adultery” and 52 percent believed that homosexuality should be illegal in the U.K.
Considering that the Muslim population exceeded 3 million for the first time in 2016, as noted at the time by The U.K. Daily Telegraph, these numbers were “astonishing” and “troubling” to Trevor Phillips, the former chairman of Great Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission.
“For a long time, I, too, thought that Europe’s Muslims would become like previous waves of migrants, gradually abandoning their ancestral ways, wearing their religious and cultural baggage lightly, and gradually blending into Britain’s diverse identity landscape,” he told the U.K. Daily Express last April.
He thought wrong, though he was by no means alone. The U.S. liberal media, which would do practically anything to defend Muslims, has also fallen for this myth. In fact, The New York Times tried dismissing the poll by citing Muslim Council of Britain leader Miqdaad Versi, who claimed the poll used the views of a “fringe minority.”
Is that why a poll taken later in the year by the British think tank Policy Exchange uncovered the exact same trends, with 16 percent of respondents expressing strong support for replacing British law with Sharia law, and 25 percent expressing just moderate support?
Similar results have also been seen in polls concerning Muslims in America and elsewhere.
Martin Boon, the director of the company responsible for performing the poll, said it best, noting in a statement to the Times that critics of such polls had yet to offer any evidence showing “that Muslims living in more integrated areas have different views” from those his organization had uncovered.
Facts are facts, and the fact is that there is something fundamentally wrong with contemporary Islam that leads far too many Muslims to either engage in or indirectly support terrorism. The U.K. needs to be very wary going forward.
